Parque La Giganta: First sighting of a Chuncho
During a field trip organized by the Fundación Tierra Austral to Parque La Giganta, a Chuncho was spotted for the first time. The location is a privately conserved area situated in the Panquehue commune, in the Valparaíso Region, perpetually protected through a Derecho Real de Conservación agreement. The species’ scientific name is Glaucidium nana; it is a bird that inhabits from Atacama to Tierra del Fuego. It measures about 20 centimeters, and due to its size and silent flight, despite being described as the most abundant owl in Chile, it is not easy to spot.
